Position Summary

The Director of Convention Center and Convention & Visitors Bureau is the Chief Executive Officer of the Waco Convention Center & Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Director of Convention Center and Convention & Visitors Bureau is responsible for the growth of tourism and convention/meeting business for the City of Waco. The Director of Convention Center and Convention & Visitors Bureau oversees the continued execution of the Strategic Plan, Center operations, destination marketing and sales strategies, and provides strategic leadership and oversight of WCC/WCVB. This highly visible position interfaces with key community, government, hospitality, media and tourism leaders and demonstrates WCC/CVB positive impact on Waco. The Director of Convention Center and Convention & Visitors Bureau reports to the City Manager and works closely with the WCC/WCVB Board of Directors.


The primary responsibilities of the WCC/WCVB Director of Convention Center and Convention & Visitors Bureau are:

  • Overseeing of the day-to-day operations and administration of WCC/WCVB and its programs and policies.
  • Organizing, coordinating, and implementing the day-to-day activities involved in the promotion of Waco and its tourism industry.
  • Overseeing and implementing an approved sales and marketing plan.
  • Creating programs to successfully solicit and secure meetings and priority one conventions.
  • Developing and implementing programs to promote Waco to outside visitors, convention and meeting attendees.
  • Overseeing and managing a continuous improvement plan at the WCC/WCVB.
  • Representing WCC/WCVB in support of local festivals, events, attractions, facilities, and community organizations.
  • Representing WCC/WCVB at key industry functions, events, and meetings at city and county council.
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring the annual WCC/WCVB budget.
  • Developing, coordinating and implementing financial strategies and programs that maintain the fiscal integrity of WCC/WCVB.
  • Overseeing the development, implementation and documentation of day-to-day financial transactions, payroll, annual reports, financial statements and statutory requirements for the WCC/WCVB.
  • Reviewing expenditures and keeping the Board of Directors and City advised of financial matters.
  • Assuring protection of assets through internal audits and inventory controls.
  • Formulating budgets and practicing fiscal responsibility while carrying out WCC/WCVB programs.
  • Monitoring the finances of the WCC/WCVB.
  • Maintaining accurate records and monitoring the progress WCC/WCVB programs and projects.
  • Supervising all staff and their assigned duties.

  • Managing human resources related to WCC/WCVB staff and organization including performance reviews, as well as helping employees develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge and abilities.

  • Developing individual, team and accountability goals for staff.

  • Directs the activities of the CC/CVB management staff; plans, prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; instructs and trains staff, monitors work, develops staff skills and evaluates performance; analyzes workload trends and implements staffing and assignment adjustments.

  • Approving all requests for staff vacations and leaves of absence.

  • Serve on appropriate community committees and boards.

  • Managing external communication in order to obtain maximum publicity of programs and accomplishments.

  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with Waco City Council, City Management, Board of Directors and County officials.

  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the City of Waco and the Board of Directors.

Ideal Education, Background & Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred, bachelor’s degree required. Committee reserves the right to substitute industry tenure for education.
  • 5 years of Convention Center DMO leadership experience with strong skills in Venue operations, Product Development, Destination Marketing and Meetings and Convention Sales.
  • Management experience a must.
  • Destination development and experiential development important
  • Experience collaborating with volunteer boards, elected officials, and the public.
  • An understanding of marketing, public relations, and communications.
  • Experience in recruiting and building an exceptional operations and sales and marketing team.
  • Experience selling and leading a sales team to attract conventions and meetings.
  • Understanding of budgeting, financial analysis, with full P&L responsibility.
  • Experience with setting goals, measuring success and holding others accountable.

Key Priorities For The First 12 Months

1. Organizing and leading the ongoing implementation process for the Strategic Plan

2. Reach out to all stakeholder groups and develop strong confidence and credibility in the WCC/WCVB (WCC/WCVB Board of Directors, hoteliers, restaurants owners/managers, the Waco Sports Corporation, the Waco Regional Airport, area & regional attractions, and city and county leaders.

3. Develop strategies in support of the Strategic Plan to effectively operate the Convention Center, market and secure meetings, conventions, special events and sports tournaments that result in increased hotel occupancy.

4. Develop monthly, quarterly and annual sales goals and establish accountability/metrics on new business development.

5. Plan annual sales and marketing calendar to ensure ROI (definite business from WCC/WCVB leads) with the sales team.

6. In conjunction with the strategic plan implementation, investigate opportunities and development of events that result in hotel occupancy.

7. Ensure that the short and long term strategic plans are in place and accounted for including staffing, SOP development, deployment and current programs.

8. Finalize and implement an employee incentive plan.

9. Create and monitor WCC/WCVB budget for presentation and approval by the Waco County Council.

10. Monitor WCC/WCVB financial matters and provide the Board Treasurer and Board of Directors with timely reports.

11. Monitor all sales and marketing plans and review with Board’s Marketing Committee.

12. Create annual short and long-term vision/goals with the WCC/WCVB Board of Directors for approval by the City Manager and City Council.

13. Participate in community boards and organizations and be recognized as a contributing leader in the community.
