Frequently Asked Questions about the New DMS Program
TRANSITION QUESTIONS
Is it more beneficial to complete my TDM, or start the DMS program?
The choice is entirely yours. Depending on where you are in your TDM, you may want to go ahead and finish TDM. Here is the official transition scale to help you make your decision:
* Completed at least 80 TDM credits (not including heritage) = two DMS electives done
* Completed at least 20 TDM credits (not including heritage) = one DMS elective done
* Less than 20 TDM Credits (not including heritage) = no transfer
* Attended one TACVB-offered Heritage Tour = Tour done
* Attended DMP session = DMP requirement done
What if I want to continue to earn my TDM, can I still earn credits at both Annual and Winter conferences?
Yes, you will still be able to earn TDM credits at all TACVB Conferences for the next 3 years.
If I chose to complete my TDM, how much time do I have to complete it?
You will have until the end of 2025 (three years) to complete your TDM certificate program.
I attended Destination Marketing Principles while earning my TDM, do I need to attend it again for my DMS?
No, that credit will be carried forward to the DMS program.
Why can’t I transfer TDM credits toward a core track?
The core tracks are meant to provide a master class style curriculum so in order to maintain the integrity of the DMS program we will not be allowing transition credits toward those tracks.
I completed my TDM already, what does my transition look like?
Since you have earned your TDM, you will have to register and pay for the DMS program should you choose to continue your education. Your Destination Experience Tour and Destination Marketing Principles requirements will be considered complete.
DMS GENERAL QUESTIONS
Why did we make this change?
To make our educational certification more meaningful and marketable for you as tourism professionals. Through DMS we will:
* Elevate our educational program by ensuring a consistent professional development model and adding processes to evaluate student participation
* We have developed a curriculum of core topics within the tourism industry that provides a more actionable education program
* Simplify the process of earning the certification and managing it
Why is Texas not in the name?
We wanted to be able to expand this program outside of Texas and wanted to ensure that the education would apply no matter where the participants were working.
How will my core tracks and electives be tracked for the DMS program?
We will be managing the DMS program through the new TACVB Extranet. An instruction video will be available soon!
What are the metrics for the test?
The test component of the Core Tracks will be in short answer format. We simply want you to tell us what you learned from that session and how you will implement what you learned at your destination.
What happens if I fail the test?
If the review team feels your answers need more explanation, they will reach out to you so that you can expand on your answer.
Why is only 1 Destination Experience Tour required now?
We still wanted to be able to showcase our destinations but wanted to make it feasible to complete the program in a timely manner.
I am close to completing my TDM, but I also want to start earning for my DMS. Can I earn dual credit?
Yes, you may register and pay for the DMS program and earn dual credit while completing the TDM program as well.
If I chose to complete my TDM and start my DMS, how will I designate credits to each? Will there be two separate forms?
No, there will be your normal TDM form and a sign-in/sign-out sheet for DMS sessions.
Can I recommend a new core track topic?
The core tracks are set to keep the curriculum as planned. However, we are always open to new Elective topics!
Why is there now recertification?
We added recertification into the program in order to ensure our participants are staying on top of the trends in the industry.
My DMO is unable to send staff to both TACVB conferences each year, and I may not be able to complete my core tracks in 5 years. Can I still earn my DMS?
The DMS Committee will evaluate special circumstances.
Why can’t we transfer credits from other organizations?
We removed transfer credit opportunities in an effort to maintain a curriculum and the integrity of the new certification.
Why can we no longer receive credits for Committee Service or Board Service?
In order to simplify the process, we have removed this credit option for the new program. We wanted to ensure we maintained the integrity of the education in this new certification.
