Congratulations to our Award Winners!

During our 2017 Annual Conference in Fort Worth, several TACVB members were honored with awards and accolades.

Legacy Award

The TACVB Legacy Award is presented to an individual that exhibits characteristics of legacy, vision, inspiration, leadership, professionalism, and hospitality. Our recipient has greatly shaped the success of the tourism industry in Texas.

Through their commitment and influence, they have dedicated years of service to build a strong foundation for TACVB and for future generations.

The winner of the 2017 Legacy Award is Kim Phillips with the Denton CVB! Our honoree’s career has spanned more than 26 years in Texas tourism, destination marketing, and meeting planning.

Kim Phillips is a past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Texas Travel Industry Association, the Texas Association of Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dallas Fort Worth Area Tourism Council, and the Texas Lakes Trail Region of the Texas Heritage Trails program. Leadership is part of her DNA.

Kim is innovative. She isn’t afraid to try new things and empowers her staff to do the same. As an example of her innovation, the Denton CVB’s participation at Austin’s South by Southwest. Their virtual reality tours of Denton not only garnered the attention of the Idea Fair judges, it received press coverage around the country.

Kim is the reason why #Detoning is not just a verb and a hashtag. It’s a way of life. Not only does she promote it, but she lives, breathes, and eats it on a daily basis, showing her commitment to the success of the community.

“When called, she is there to assist, mentor, and lead an industry she has loved for many years, and will no doubt continue to represent for years to come. While she may not intend to leave a legacy, she already has through her dedication to the travel and tourism industry she knows and loves.” – Diann Bayes, San Angelo CVB

Please join us in congratulating Kim Phillips – TACVB’s 2017 Legacy Award winner!

Catalyst Award

TACVB wanted to create a new award that recognized the contributions of someone who is relatively new to the tourism industry. Not necessarily a “young professional” award, the Catalyst Award recognizes the contributions that our winner has demonstrated in a relatively short period of time in the industry – young or old.

The TACVB Catalyst Award is presented to an individual that exhibits characteristics of service, innovation, involvement, commitment, and leadership. This year’s recipient has demonstrated outstanding or “breakout” achievements and contributions in a relatively short period of time.

Through their strong commitment to the industry, TACVB relies on this person to help shape the future of the organization.

The winner of the 2017 Catalyst Award was Shane Sorenson from Visit Plano! “Shane’s work ethic and experience rivals that of those many years his senior. A resourceful, creative and solution-oriented individual, Shane frequently initiates new and innovative approaches to getting things accomplished. The integrity and professionalism Shane displays during day-to-day interactions with Visit Plano and our partners is a quality rarely found in an individual of his age. Having worked with a number of young individuals over the years, Shane remains one of those shining stars you come across only once in a great while.,” says Mark Thompson, Executive Director of Visit Plano. We couldn’t agree more.

Among the many stellar entries in the 2017 Idea Fair, one stood out to the judges for its creativity, relevance, humor, and staying power. The Judge’s Choice for Best Overall Project was awarded to Visit Lubbock for their National Tourism Week campaign! You can check out their clever and funny video online here.
