 Destination Marketing Principles Seminars

The McAllen DMP will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Embassy Suites McAllen Convention Center and is hosted by the McAllen Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Destination Marketing Principles is designed especially for local and regional DMO staff, hotel and attractions partners, downtown organizations, elected officials, board members, and volunteers and advocates. The seminar offers a full day of information that is beneficial to anyone involved in promoting a destination to visitors. 

The first half of the day is dedicated to the principles of destination marketing. The morning session features information on all aspects of DMO operations including structure, funding, markets and marketing strategies, responsibilities, measurement, hotel occupancy tax usage, partnerships, trends, and much more. This session is taught by two DMO CEOs who have decades of combined experience in DMO operations.

The upcoming Destination Marketing Principles Seminar will also feature three engaging afternoon sessions related to drawing visitors into downtown, one from Catherine Sak with the Texas Downtown Association, one from Michelle Leftwich with the City of McAllen, and the final session from Rebecca Olaguibel also with the City of McAllen.

A total of 11 Texas Destination Marketer certificate credit hours can be earned by attending the seminar.

South Texas is home to some amazing downtowns.  In this session you'll learn how some key connections can make a difference to visitors, residents, and business owners. Connections between business owners allow for more effective marketing and promotions. Connections with local and regional residents provide businesses with opportunities to expand their customer bases and help residents be better ambassadors to visitors.  Connections with Winter Texans can generate more volunteers and new events.   What connections do you have in your community?.

Rezoning and Repurposing for Tourism"  (Michelle Leftwich, Assistant City Manager, McAllen)

In 2004, McAllen enacted special zoning permits and designated an Entertainment and Cultural District with hopes of revitalizing its aging downtown.  Since then, McAllen’s 17th Street Entertainment District has become the social hot spot of the Rio Grande Valley, rivaling those of larger metropolitan cities in Texas.  In this session you will learn why this decision was made, what hurdles city leaders have had to overcome and how it has become a premier nightlife destination for locals and visitors alike.

“Retail Tourism” (Rebecca Olaguibel, Retail Development Director, City of McAllen) 

Retail business is a major economic driver in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. In this session you will learn about the economic impact of retail business and how to work with your local tourism partners to establish your city as a retail destination.  You will also gain insight about what attracts major retail stores to destinations and what your city can do to position itself for future growth in the domestic and international retail market.
