Davis Phillips, President & CEO of Phillips Entertainment Inc.

Named 2019 Recipient of Gene Phillips Hospitality Award

Distinguished tourism industry figure Davis Phillips, President & CEO of Phillips Entertainment Inc., has been named the 2019 recipient of the Gene Phillips Hospitality Award. This award will be presented on April 4, by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) at ceremonies held during the annual Texas Travel Counselors Conference in Houston next month. The award recognizes Phillips's distinguished career and industry leadership, as well as his efforts on behalf of TxDOT's Travel Information Centers and the state's $74.7 billion travel industry.

"Davis Phillips is such a great friend and supporter of TxDOT and our Travel Information Centers," said Joan Henderson, Director of the Travel Information Division at TxDOT. "His tireless work brings tremendous benefit to us and to the Texas travel industry as a whole. This is a very well-deserved award."

Phillips follows a family legacy in his tourism career; he is Gene Phillips's grandson, and the nephew of previous award winner and veteran tourism industry leader Bob Phillips. Phillips helped found Phillips Entertainment Inc. in 2000 and assumed the reins as President & CEO in 2007. He has chaired the Board of Directors of the Texas Travel Industry Association (TTIA) and continues to serve in various leadership roles in that organization. Phillips is a key advocate for the industry, working closely with stakeholders and decision makers to boost awareness of the importance of travel to the Texas economy.

This award also recognizes Phillips's outstanding support of TxDOT's Travel Information Centers. He has worked on to coordinate and host the TTIA Study Tour, one of the two annual events that provide the bulk of training for TxDOT's travel counselors, since 2009. He also serves as a key liaison between TTIA and TxDOT's travel counselors, ensuring that the partnership between the organizations provides maximum benefit to both.

The Gene Phillips Hospitality Award is named in honor of the late Gene Phillips, who managed Aquarena Springs in San Marcos and was an influential, driving force in the emerging tourism industry during the 1970s. Each year the award is presented by TxDOT Travel Information Division staff and recognizes one person for his or her outstanding lifetime accomplishments within the Texas travel and tourism industry.

Additional awards to be presented at the Texas Travel Counselors Conference will be announced following the presentations.
