Tour of Historic Nacogdoches

The history of Nacogdoches dates all the way back to the 1600s when the Caddo Indians settled this land between two creeks. Since that time the people in Nacogdoches have been making or preserving our history. We have stories and sites that tell the history of Caddo settlements, Spanish saloons, early Texas homesteaders, battles fought for independence and modern day preservationists. Our beautiful city is peppered with museums, historic sites, historical markers, statues and men and women that love our history and are eager to share it with you! Join us in historic downtown Nacogdoches, where there's always something new and always something old to see! Included on tour: Railroad Depot, Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens, Sterne-Hoya House, Museum & Library, Old University Building, Zion Hill First Baptist Church. “Pioneering with Artists” (Beverly Abell, Downtown Development Manager, City of Mesquite)

Artists are known to be innovators and big-vision people, and yet so often they are left out of the economic development process. By inviting artists to be part of the process from the start, you can tap into their creative thinking and energy.  In this session, learn how artists can be “instrumental” in “drawing out” your plans for a great downtown that will attract visitors, new development, residents and more. You will leave this session with ideas on how to organize with artists, start with a simple plan and work over time with artists to edit, add and grow programming, public design and the economy of the arts in your community.
