TDM Certification Program Guidelines

Purpose

The TDMC program is administered by the Texas Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus and serves as an educational framework for marketing Texas as a destination for both tourism and group business. The program provides a structure for continuing professional development and is offered to tourism and hospitality professionals.

 

Objective

The TDMC program offers education and training in 12 disciplines (listed below) with emphasis on best practices in the tourism and hospitality industry.  The program demonstrates TACVB's strong commitment to strengthening the knowledge base of employees in convention and visitor bureaus and destination marketing organizations.  Upon completion of the program, a professional TDMC Designation is awarded.

 

Program

Candidates who earn and receive six (6) certificates including the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism discipline and attend the Destination Marketing Principles Seminar (formerly CVB 101) will be awarded the TDM Designation and recognition at the TACVB Annual Conference. All candidates MUST register online, select a minimum of six (6) disciplines, and pay a one-time, upfront program fee of $250 prior to beginning the program. Candidates interested in pursuing additional certificates, above the required 6 disciplines, will be subject to a $20/per discipline additional fee. Requirements to Earn Certificates

  1.  The TDM program offers education and training in twelve (12) disciplines.
  2. Candidates may attain certification in all disciplines, however, a minimum of six (6) disciplines are REQUIRED.
  3. Candidates are awarded a certificate at the TACVB Annual Conference for each discipline in which they have earned the minimum 27 required credits.
  4. Candidates that earn and receive six (6) certificates including the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism discipline and attend the Destination Marketing Principles Seminar (formerly CVB 101) will be awarded the TDM Designation and recognition at the TACVB Annual Conference.
  5. All candidates MUST register online, select a minimum of six (6) disciplines, and pay a one-time, upfront program fee of $250 prior to beginning the program.  Candidates interested in pursuing additional certificates, above the required six (6) disciplines, will be subject to a $20/per discipline additional fee.  Program registration forms are available at TACVB.org/Programs.  (See Addendum J)
    • All candidates must complete the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism discipline track to receive TDM recognition.
    • All candidates are required to attend a Destination Marketing Principles Seminar (formerly CVB 101) offered at a TACVB annual conference or other TACVB education events.  (See Addendum F)

Requirements to earn Discipline Certificates

Certification in any single knowledge area requires a minimum of 27 credits.

  1. A minimum of 19 of the 27 credits (70%) must be earned for each certificate at a TACVB event.
  2. No more than eight (8) credits may be earned from approved allied sessions for each certificate.

Credits are earned by:

  1.  Attending TACVB general and educational sessions at Annual Conference and other TACVB education events (i.e., DMP seminars, webinars, symposiums, etc.).  The number of credits awarded for a session attended will be determined by the credit scale listed in Addendum E.
  2. Transfer credits can be earned by attending education sessions and workshops offered by allied associations and must be PRE-APPROVED.  (See Addendum G & H)
    1.  Sessions offered by allied associations must be submitted for pre-approval within 14-30 day prior to attending the event.  An online TDM – Transfer Credit Application submission is required.  Application forms are available at TACVB.org/Programs and candidates must include event details and discipline(s) to apply credits.
    2.  Proof of attendance to the event must be submitted within 30 days after attending the event.
    3.  The number of credits awarded for a session offered by an allied association will be based on the credit scale listed in Addendum E.
  3.  Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism credits can be earned by writing a research paper on a pre-approved topic.  Candidates must submit a TDM – Essay Credit Application for topic approval.  This paper earns credits towards ONLY the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate.  (See Addendum I)

Participants MUST upload completed credits and verification documentation to their online TACVB profile at TACVB.org.  Earned credits must be uploaded to profile within 90 days of receiving credits.  Earned credits shall not be split between disciplines for one session.  Upload instructions are available at TACVB.org/Programs.

 

Credits for the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate may be earned by participating in approved sessions, group activities and tours.  Example – tours offered at TACVB or approved transfer credit events.

 

Credits can be earned by actively serving on TACVB committees and the TACVB Board of Directors.  Volunteers must submit a TDM – Committee Service Credit Form requesting credits be applied to transcript.  (See Addendum D)

 

Earned credits must be recorded by the TACVB Office no later than June 1 in order for a certificate to be awarded at TACVB Annual Conference.

 

Credits are not earned from normal work duties or activities.

 

Program registration and credits earned will be the sole ownership of the candidate and is non-transferable to any other participant.

 

Requirements to earn TDM Designation

  1. To complete the entire certification program and receive the TDM Designation, candidates must complete six (6) of the twelve (12) disciplines – 27 credits per discipline.
  2. Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism is a required core discipline that all TDM candidates MUST complete in order to receive the TDM Designation.
  3. Destination Marketing Principles Seminar (formerly CVB 101) is a required class that all candidates must take to receive their TDM Designation.  Credits may be applied to any discipline track EXCEPT Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism.
  4. Total credits earned must include a minimum of 70% earned at TACVB events.

TDM Program Administration and requirements for registration

  1. The TDM Program is administered by TACVB.
  2. Applicants MUST complete the online registration form, select a minimum of six (6) disciplines, and pay the program fee to be considered a TDM program candidate. Program registration forms are available at TACVB.org/Programs.
  3. TACVB will maintain an online listing of approved allied organizations at TACVB.org/Programs from which transfer credits may be eligible.  (See Addendum H)
  4. Transfer and other credits submissions must be submitted no later than June 1 each year to be eligible for certificate recognition at Annual Conference.
  5. Candidates can access a transcript of credits earned by signing into their online profile at TACVB.org.
  6. Candidates are required to upload completed credits and verification forms to their online profile at TACVB.org.
  7. Candidates registered for one (1) or more disciplines prior to August 1, 2017 will be grandfathered in' at the $120/6 disciplines, therefore, they are not subject to pay the increased $150 participation fee.  All candidates will be required to pay a $20 fee for additional disciplines above the 6 (six) required.
  8. The TACVB Board of Directors or its designee will oversee the administration of the program and will establish an advisory committee to oversee the development of the program and the progress of program participants.  Advisory Committee members shall be a TDM designee or within their final year of earning the TDM Designation.

Addendum

A. TDNC Program Credit Requirement:

Any TACVB member who has completed the original TDNC program will earn 36 TDM credits.  Twenty-seven of those credits will be applied to the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism track.  The remaining nine (9) credits may be applied towards other disciplines.

 

B. Tourism Industry Experience Credit Requirement:

Members new to TACVB who apply to the program may also receive six (6) credits for every year they have been in the CVB industry.  These credits can be applied to any area of knowledge EXCEPT Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism.

 

C. TACVB Staff Participation Requirement:

TACVB staff participation in the TDM program and credits earned will require CEO and TDM Committee approval.

 

D. TACVB Committee Service Credit Requirements:

Participants of the program may receive two (2) credits for actively serving on TACVB committees and/or the TACVB Board of Directors with a limit of no more than four (4) total credits per year based on the committee chair’s verification.

 

E. TDM Credit Scale:

Attendance in TACVB’s educational training sessions will be verified at the beginning and end of each session.  The number of credits awarded for a session attended will be determined by actual instruction time and based on the following credit scale:

F. Destination Marketing Principles Seminar Requirement:

Members who have taught a Destination Marketing Principles Seminar (formerly CVB 101) within 5 years of applying to the TDM program will not be required to attend this class to earn DMP credits.

 

G. TDM Transfer Credits Requirements:

Participants may transfer credits from education courses provided by approved allied organizations, not to exceed six (6) credits per year (with the exception of those to satisfy the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate, for which there is not a limit to transfer credits).  All transfer credit courses must be PRE-APPROVED through an online transfer credit application process.  Applications are available online at TACVB.org/Programs.  Transfer credit requests to be earned at an allied organization may be PRE-APPROVED by staff.  Transfer credits to be earned at a non-allied association event may also be considered and must be PRE-APPROVED by staff who may seek recommendations from the TDM Committee.  All subject matter being taught by outside organizations will be evaluated as to whether it falls within the TDM areas of knowledge disciplines.  Once coursework is complete, candidates must upload proof of participation to their online transcript at TACVB.org within 30 days from the date of the event in order for the transfer credits to be approved.  Participants will be notified by staff when a decision has been made.

 

H. TACVB Approved Allied Associations:

Transfer credits for specific coursework offered by approved allied organizations are subject to pre-approval by TACVB staff.  Approved allied organizations include:

  • American Bus Association (ABA)
  • American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)
  • Destinations International
  • Event Service Professionals Association (ESPA)
  • Houston First Tourism Summit
  • International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM)
  • Meeting Professionals International (MPI)
  • National Association of Sports Commission (NASC)
  • National Tour Association (NTA)
  • Preservation Texas Summit
  • Texas Downtown Association (TDA)
  • Texas Historical Commission (THS)
  • Texas Hotel/Lodging Association (TH/LA)
  • Texas Leadership Institute (TLI)
  • Texas Municipal League (TML)
  • Texas Society of Association Executives (TSAE)
  • Texas Travel Industry Association (TTIA)

I. Essay Credit Option for Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism Requirements: 

Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism is a REQUIRED core discipline that must be completed (27 credits) in order to receive the TDM Designation.  To assist in earning credits towards the Texas heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate, participants may elect to write an essay paper and be awarded 20 credits towards the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate.  The essay topic must be PRE-APPROVED and adhere to the following requirements: 

  1. The participant must complete the online Essay Approval Form for approval by the TDM committee prior to beginning the essay.  The Essay Approval Form is available at TACVB.org/Programs.
  2. Candidates may choose from a list of suggested topics, or submit for approval an alternative topic on Texas heritage and/or cultural tourism.  A list of suggested topics are available at TACVB.org/Programs.
  3. A candidate’s paper must be an ORIGINAL essay in thesis form on a Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism topic and will earn credits towards the Texas Heritage/Cultural Tourism certificate.  The essay content:
    1. shall advance the understanding of Texas heritage and/or cultural influences on tourism in Texas
    2. must contain a minimum of 1,000 and maximum 3,000 words, double-spaced
    3. must Incorporate an introduction, analysis with main findings/viewpoints, a conclusion with applications, and an executive summary or abstract
    4. shall have a minimum of ten (10) sources
    5. should follow a structured formatting style such as:
      1. American Psychological Association (APA) thesis format
      2. Indiana University-Bloomington thesis writing style
    6. Candidates will have a maximum of 180 days to complete the essay from the date of approval by the TDM committee.  Time extensions must be approved by TDM committee.  The TDM committee will review the completed essay for compliance to the requirements and will award twenty (20) credits for successful completion.
    7. Following completion, the essay will be included as part of the online TACVB Resource Library at TACVB.org/Resources.
    8. The essay option may be exercised only one (1) time.

J. Program Grandfathered Requirement

 TDM candidates registered for at least one (1) discipline prior to August 1, 2017 will be grandfathered in at the $120 registration fee for the required 6 disciplines.
