Position reports to Chamber President & Tourism Director
Purpose: Create an effective marketing plan that showcases Paris and Lamar County as a Convention, Meeting and Tourism destination in order to generate a positive economic impact for our community.

  • Experienced in public speaking and presentations.
  • Partner with Tourism Director in creating bid packets to submit for presentations, and working to design sales materials for marketing.
  • Research associations and their activities, initiating and following leads, and inviting decision makers for presentations. Make personal sales calls, in person and via telemarketing, e-mails and other written correspondence targeted to all prospective assigned markets and clients.
  • Actively seeking prospective education, corporate, military, family reunions, weddings and group tour markets by a combination of cold-calling, travel, and following up on leads, with the ultimate goal of finalizing convention and meeting contracts and active participation of carrying out those contracts.
  • Plan and coordinate with the Tourism Director, hotel, civic center and city tours for meeting planners and planning or contemplating Paris as a convention destination.
  • Attend Hoteliers meeting with Tourism Director to establish and maintain a cooperative and professional business relationship with all hotels in Paris.
  • Visit and work with Meeting planners, sports and athletic Tournament coordinators to attract new events, and increase hotel room block sales.
  • Recognize and diligently act on competitive opportunities that will result in sales/bookings
  • Knowledge of the Funding Request that is used to attract Tourism business to Paris/Lamar County and how to present it during the bid process.
  • Maintains a high degree of integrity when making decisions that involve the use of funds generated by local taxes.
  • The work conditions include occasional irregular work hours; maintain flexibility, interruptions, varying routine and unpredictable situations while working on multiple projects and priorities.
  • Extensive travel involved including sales trips in order to generate new leads, developing relationships with current clients, and attending industry meetings and events seeking new business outside our zip code area.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship and attitude with office staff, and volunteers.
  • When in town, attends evening functions in order to foster a sense of community spirit comradery among coworkers.
  • Positive approach to issues, and trying to work out solution that is best for all involved.
  • Always promoting Paris/Lamar County in a positive manner to both residents and visitors.
  • Must know information about Paris/Lamar County in order to answer questions about availability of accommodations needed for meetings, conventions, and events
  • Keep current and accurate files on all groups that have or may utilize Paris hotels and/or meeting facilities with proper documentation of all activities and updates in the database software.
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of the local inventory of attractions, restaurants, shops, lodging options, meeting facilities…..everything that contributes to the success of a convention experience in Paris.
  • Solid skill level in terms of all software specifically associated with the Microsoft Office package; Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and the Office’s Database System. Graphic design knowledge would be a huge help in our marketing materials, tourism related software.
  • Assists Tourism Director of the VCC with all segments of the VCC’s communications and public relations programs.
  • Assists Tourism Director with generating editorial coverage for the City of Paris, Paris hotel properties and attractions and the Paris VCC through development of news releases, “pitching” travel trends and current event story ideas to the media.  Develop and maintain social media presence.
  • Manages library of advertising/marketing visuals and distribution to organizations and media per request.
  • Develops materials and writes articles in a continuing effort to obtain maximum media coverage for the destination, such as press kits, guidebooks, newspapers and magazines for both trade and consumer visitors.
  • Maintains database of travel writers, editors and related media associates based on interests.
  • Writes and edits the quarterly newsletter and the monthly update.
  • Assist with promotional materials, such as slide presentations, videos, etc. for both tourism and convention sales and media blitzes.
  • Plans, implements and solicits participation from regional and national media in press tours; develops tour concept; creates itinerary and manages all tour logistics from inception to completion and post-tour follow up.
  • Manages library of advertising/marketing visuals and distribution to organizations and media per request.
  • Participates in various industry organization and activities to maintain positive relationships and awareness of the City of Paris, the Lamar County Chamber and the VCC.
  • Travels to attend trade shows, meetings, conferences, special events and training.
  • Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong attention to detail and proofreading, desktop publishing a plus.
  • Proficiency in writing skills, including a command of grammar, usage and vocabulary.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and related equipment, hardware and software applicable to area of assignment, specifically Microsoft Word, Power Point, Front Page, Access and Excel.
  • Knowledge of City and Chamber management policies and procedures.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with outside agencies and public and private organizations and corporations.
  • Skill in effective English oral and written communication and public speaking.
  • Skill in organizing work flow and managing multiple projects.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Reports to VCC Board each month on secured Tourism business coming to Paris.
  • Occasionally lift/carry/transport/set materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Keep a positive can-do spirit.
  • Help in office as needed when available.
