GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the primary direction of the Executive Director–Economic Development, this position is responsible for recruiting sports events and tournaments to Brownwood that will allow utilization of our sports facilities including, but not limited to:  The Bert V Massey II Sports Complex (that includes softball and baseball facilities), the Brownwood Soccer Complex, the Brownwood Coliseum, Gordon Wood Stadium, the Pecan Bayou Paddling Trail, the Bennie Houston Recreation Center, the Camp Bowie Recreation Center, the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center, the skateboard park, the disc golf course, and other parks and recreation facilities.  Coordinating the sporting events and tournaments with the City Parks and Recreation Department, Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, local and external sports organizations and other involved organizations to ensure successful events that will market Brownwood as an excellent location for sports events and tournaments of all kinds.  In addition to the direct supervision of the Executive Director-Economic Development, this position will coordinate closely with the Director of Parks and Recreation and the Executive Director-Brownwood Chamber of Commerce.  The position also coordinates with the Special Projects and Communication Manager to assist with social media, website content, and design of marketing materials and communications.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:  Seek out and prospect new sporting events and tournaments that could be hosted in Brownwood using various methods such as direct telephone contact, social media, website, e-mail, mail and other forms of communications.  Coordinates with the City Parks and Recreation Department, Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations in regard to sporting events and tournaments.  Seeks membership in and develops relationships with sports organizations and their members that can assist in bringing sporting events and tournaments to Brownwood.  Establish and maintain positive working relationships with local, regional, and national sporting groups, organizations and event/meeting planners.  Attend events/symposiums/meetings highlighting Brownwood and what the city has to offer to the sports market.  Seeks training opportunities that will help develop sports recruiting and coordination skills.  Develops promotional and marketing media to be used in the recruitment of sporting events and tournaments, working closely with the Special Projects and Communication Manager.  Gives presentations to sports organizations to make them aware of the Sports Coordinator position and activities.  Assist in awareness, preparation and delivery of events, through event management planning and operations, marketing and promo material distribution, location of appropriate facilities, equipment, service providers, volunteer coordination, and other logistical items as needed.  Work on-site during certain events that may require additional event-operations support.  Assist in tracking and documenting participation in events.  Seeks volunteers to assist with sporting events and tournaments.  Assist, where needed, in event set-up, management and tear down procedures.  Develops relationships with sports media of all kinds including newspapers, television, radio, magazines, and Internet based media who can help promote sporting events and tournaments in Brownwood.  Provides periodic reports to the Brownwood Municipal Development District, Brownwood City Council, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations about sporting activities, including economic impacts such as hotel stays and post-event customer feedback and reports.  Performs other duties as assigned.


POSITIONS SUPERVISED: No positions report directly, but may indirectly provide guidance to Parks and Recreation employees (after coordinating with and obtaining permission from the Director of Parks and Recreation) and volunteers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in a sports related professional field, marketing and/or communication preferred. At least two years of sports event recruiting, marketing and/or public relations experience required. Any combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitute for a degree or years of experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Receives limited direction. The employee normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance when necessary. The assignments may be given by the supervisor, Director of Parks and Recreation, and the Executive Director of the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce.  Requires excellent organization skills.  Must possess effective oral and written skills.  Must be able to work within the by-laws of the City and Brownwood Municipal Development District.  Knowledge of planning and coordinating sporting events.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.  Excellent marketing, public relations, and interpersonal skills.  Strong volunteer recruitment skills.  Ability to read literature, books, reviews, sports journals, and perform Internet research.  Ability to direct helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.  Ability to maintain a professional appearance at all times.  Ability to handle stressful situations regarding human relations.  Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Ability to sit, stand, and move about in both office and sports venue environments.  Employee occasionally lifts materials weighing approximately 20 to 50 pounds.  Ability to bend and squat in order to perform job functions.  May be exposed to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and weather hazards when performing job functions.  Ability to see and handle small objects. Medium level of physical activity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work some holidays, weekends, or after hours for special events, meetings or during emergency situations.  Occasional travel required.
